Diet and Life-History Traits of Savannah Dwelling Waterbirds in Southern Africa: Implications for Their Conservation Status
نویسندگان
چکیده
This study evaluates the relative contribution of reproduction-based life history traits and diet to population trends in waterbirds from southern Africa. Life (clutch size, incubation period, fledging time, body mass generation length), (prey weight, lengths number taxa represented its (NTD)) conservation status (declining/not declining) 163 waterbird species were reviewed. An index generalism was created based on NTD. Cluster analysis applied define groups waterbirds. Binomial regressions used test if different across cluster variables. Four clusters defined, with most waterfowl clustering together. Species that feed small large prey had higher probabilities declining (0.17 0.26, respectively) compared those feeding medium-sized (0.08). Amphibians, coleopterans, crustacea, molluscs tunicates by all clusters, risk populations further are high given current dwindling base. The proportions (61%) waterbirds, which have constrained habitats, calls for continued efforts mitigate disturbances wetlands.

Freshwater Mussels of Virginia (Bivalvia: Unionidae): An Introduction to Their Life History, Status and Conservation
With 77 species, the mussel fauna of Virginia is one of the most diverse in the United States. Fifty-four species or ~70% of the state’s mussel fauna occurs in the rivers of the upper Tennessee River basin, especially in the Clinch and Powell rivers of southwestern Virginia. An additional 23 species reside in rivers of the Atlantic Slope, including the Potomac, Rappahannock, York, James and Cho...
متن کاملPomacea canaliculata (Gastropoda: Ampullariidae): life-history traits and their plasticity.
Freshwater snails belonging to the Ampullariidae family show noteworthy anatomical, physiological and ecological characteristics (Berthold, 1991), which have captivated scientific interest since long ago. However, few field studies have focussed on apple snail population dynamics (Burky, 1974; Lum Kong and Kenny, 1989). International concern about the Argentinean apple snail Pomacea canaliculat...
متن کاملSpatial Genetic Structure and Life History Traits in Cerrado Tree Species: Inferences for Conservation
Spatial Genetic Structure (SGS) is correlated with life history traits and is affected by ecological and demographic processes. We discuss here the SGS within populations of three species from Cerrado Biome, Caryocar brasiliense, Dipteryx alata and Tibouchina papyrus, which vary in life history traits. Our working hypothesis was that self-incompatible and wind-dispersed species present no SGS d...

The life history traits and gonad development of an endemic cyprinid fish, the spotted barb, Capoeta mandica (Bianco & Banarescu 1982), from southern Iran was investigated by regular monthly collections from February 2006 through January 2007 and on the basis of microscopic and macroscopic analyses. No information on the spawning characteristics of the fish are available to date. A total of 335...
